Info about Omis

Omis is a small town and holiday resort 26 km southeast of Split. It lies on the left bank of the Cetina River mouth, close to its picturesque river canyon. Omis is situated at the narrow belt between the sea and steep Mosor Mountain. The Cetina River divides it into two parts.

There are large sandy beaches stretching along the seaside. In the eastern part of the holiday resort there is a string of nice coves with sandy and pebbly beaches.

Omis was settled as early as Roman times (its original name was Oneum). In the Middle Ages it was a fortified town. In 12th and 13th c Omis was ruled by Croatian Princes. From 1444 it was under the Venetian rule. Of all fortifications from the Middle Ages only the Southern Town Gate , the south-western quadrangle tower and a fortress situated on a cliff above the town of Omis, have been preserved. On the main square there is the parish church from 17th c with two paintings by the Ravenna painter Matteo Ingoli. Inside the Renaissance Palace, close to the church, a valuable collection of archaeological finds, objects of material culture and ethnographic craft objects is displayed.
In the centre of the town there is the old church of St. Spirit from 16th c. On the wooden Renaissance altar there is a valuable painting of the Venetian painter J. Palma, the junior.

Holidaymakers adore this wonderful holiday resort, unique in its beauty and geographical position. Just imagine a Mediterranean town with its own river, the most beautiful mountainous blue river pouring into the sea in the middle of the town. And above the holiday resort, so close that it is almost threatening, raises Dinaric massif of the steep Mosor mountain.
The roads from the sea are leading more and more frequently toward the interior. This change in direction reveals to holidaymakers the beauty and attractiveness they do not expect to encounter. One of such places is the region called Dalmatinska Zagora (Dalmatian hinterland), a green land in the heart of Dalmatia. It will give holidaymakers an unusual adventure if they leave Omis and try reaching Vrgorac across Mount Mosor.

This picturesque area among the high Dinaric Mountains is definitely worth experiencing. It is marked by the Cetina River, a magnificent river springing from below Mt. Dinara and winding through the north-western part of the Cetina region, flowing through high, steep mountain cliffs and finally pouring into the sea at the place where the town of Omis is located.
Several kilometres upstream there is a gorgeous building complex of the Radmans with preserved parts of an old water mill built over the river Cetina, a collection of ancient artefacts and an excellent restaurant serving delicious specialities. The complex is surrounded by exuberant greenery around this crystal-clear mountain river. Most of the adventurous scenes filmed in beautiful landscapes according to Karl May's novels were taken inside this wondrous canyon.

Holidaymakers who want to test the challenges of nature will find here numerous reasons for their excursions: horseback riding, cycling, rafting across the white waters and cascades of the Cetina River or angling trout. At the end of a strenuous day tourists will enjoy delicious food specialities and excellent wines in numerous restaurants and wine cellars. Holidaymakers can find comfortable accommodation in numerous apartments, villas and house rentals in Omis - the charming holiday resort in Croatia. Whoever comes to this unique corner of Croatia will never forget its special beauty -a blend of the sea holiday resorts and its green adventurous interior.
